Socialism 2017 is a four-day conference bringing together hundreds of socialists and radical activists from around the country to take part in discussions about Marxism, working-class history, and the debates and strategies for organizing today.
Every year, the Socialism conferences aims to be a place where activists can share lessons from their struggles—from the boycott, divestment and sanction campaign for Palestine to the fight for LGBT liberation, from the Fight for 15 to the struggle to stop the destruction of the planet, the fight against racism, and more.
With well over 100 meetings, the weekend will feature left-wing authors and thinkers discussing the debates on the left today, as well as meetings on the hidden history of working-class and socialist struggles.
So join us in Chicago July 6–9, 2017!
Students: You can be the bridge to Socialism 2017 at your school!
We need your help to build this conference: The world is in crisis and the number of youth and students looking for socialist politics and lasting organization has never been greater. Millions have demonstrated over the last month alone. To get as many of you to the conference as possible, we are offering you 50% off registration.
You are not the only one: If you plaster your campus with posters and brochures for Socialism 2017 and help sign students up for our announcements mailing list, you will find other students who think that a socialist movement that stands against war, tyranny, oppression, and exploitation is the main thing this country needs. Don’t hesitate!—email us today to get the materials you need to organize and get answers about how to build at your school: [email protected]
This year the Socialism Conference will be held at the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place hotel, located at 2233 South Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, just a few short blocks from Chinatown on Chicago’s South Side.
Housing is not included as part of conference registration. The Hyatt is offering guests to our conference a discounted room rate of $105 a night until June 15th. Please use this link to book rooms at the hotel: https://aws.passkey.com/go/Socialism2017.
After that deadline all remaining rooms are released back into their general pool and can be booked by hotel guests that will not be attending the conference. If you have four people sharing two queen beds, each person will pay just $26.25 per night (before tax)—which is cheaper than any other hotel in town or AirBnB.
Hotels often have a waitlist for rooms, so it is likely that all rooms that are released back into the general pool will immediately become unavailable for conference guests. If any rooms do remain at the Hyatt after that date, they will also dramatically increase in price. Rooms at other hotels with likely be both significantly more expensive, much further away from the site of the conference—which will also cause you to incur additional transit costs. Because of this, we strongly encourage conference attendees to book their rooms as soon as possible.
If any guests would prefer to make reservations over the phone, you can use the following phone numbers:
U.S. guests: 1-888-421-1442
International guests: 1-402-592-6464
(Make sure to mention that you are attending the Socialism 2017 conference when you call in order to get the discounted conference rate.)
The Socialism 2017 conference will take place from Thursday, July 6th, to Sunday, July 9th. The conference will start first thing in the morning on Thursday and will finish in mid-afternoon on Sunday.
(Please note that this year’s conference will take place from Thursday to Sunday, not Friday to Monday as it did last year).
How to Get Here
The Hyatt Regency McCormick is located just a few blocks from the Cermak-Chinatown Red Line station as well as the Cermak-McCormick Green Line station. The hotel is on several major bus lines as well as Metra commuter rail.
You can find detailed options for airport transportation on the Hyatt’s website: http://mccormickplace.hyatt.com/en/hotel/our-hotel/transportation.html
Conference attendees will receive discounted, on-site parking at a rate of $17 per day.
There is also a very limited amount of free and metered parking on neighborhood streets. Guests who choose this option should be aware of any posted parking restrictions and regulations set by the City of Chicago, as private companies hired by the city will ticket and boot aggressively.
The annual Socialism Conference offers free, on-site childcare for children aged 6 months to 13 years to all conference attendees who purchase a conference ticket and inform us of their childcare needs by the childcare registration deadline. We make this a priority so that all parents can attend and fully participate in the conference knowing their children are enjoying themselves as well. Childcare staff offer a range of engaging and fun activities for children of all ages.
You can register for childcare at the same time as you register for the conference. During registration you will be asked to note whether you will need childcare during the course of the conference, how many children you will need it for and on which days, as well as information about them (their names, ages, and any special needs). Please note the conference schedule above and monitor it for any updates. While we offer free childcare during the course of each day’s sessions, we do not offer it in the evenings after conference sessions have concluded.
Offering professional, on-site childcare for a four-day conference of 1,500 people is an enormous undertaking for a project of our size. To support our operation, we ask all conference attendees who can to contribute a donation to help fund the operation. We also ask that anyone who uses post-session, evening childcare on nights it is offered to contribute extra to the fund.
The deadline for childcare this year is midnight (CST) on Monday, June 5. Because we need adequate time to coordinate childcare and determine how many staff members we’ll need, we will not be able to accept any requests for childcare after this deadline. We will not consider any exceptions to this policy.
If you have any special needs you would like the conference to be aware of in advance, please email us at [email protected].
The Hyatt hotel and all conference activities are wheelchair accessible.
Spanish-language translation is available throughout the conference. Please make your request for translation when you register on-site. To allow us time to arrange for adequate time to arrange for translation, please inform us of your needs by Monday, June 5th. If you forget to mention that you need translation during registration, please email [email protected] by the deadline with your request.
An all-gender bathroom will be available on the second floor of the conference center for the duration of the conference.
Press and Recording
Press passes for the conference must be approved in advance by emailing: [email protected]. The deadline to apply for a press pass is Friday, June 23th.
We do not allow videotaping at the conference. We will make audio and select video recordings of all sessions freely available after the conference at our multimedia website, WeAreMany.org.
The Hyatt Regency McCormick Place is a non-smoking hotel. Conference attendees may not smoke in their rooms or within 15 feet of the buildings. There will be a large patio near meeting rooms and the bar/restaurant where smoking is permissible.
Where to eat
Attendees will be responsible for all their own meals. The Hyatt has three restaurants and a to-go cafe inside the hotel.
Hotel rooms include refrigerators, and we encourage attendees to bring food from home, make the short trip to Trader Joe’s, or order grocery delivery from Instacart to stock up for the weekend (you must include a room number on your order).
The hotel bar will be open all weekend. Last call is at 1:15am. You are welcome to have your own alcohol in your guest room but please do not bring outside beverages into the public areas of the hotel.
If you have further questions, please email us at [email protected] for more information.
See you in Chicago!
